The Mexican Candy Store

image

I know what you are thinking: How big can a candy store really be?

Mexican or not, how much candy can one store actually sell?

The answer is: a lot!

There are plenty of small, mom and pop type candy stores all over town. But there are also these huge, warehouse type candy stores. It’s the kind of place where you walk in and say to yourself: “I knew it. I knew it existed”. It is the incarnation of your childhood candy dreams, except maybe a bit bigger. It’s isles and isles of candy. Of course, because they know that adults are doing the driving to their location, and adults who carry the wallets, there’s also an isle or two of party supplies and candy related items (like party decorations made out of candy). But mostly it’s just candy.

The Mexican candy store will ruin all your other candy shopping experiences. A whole isle of candy in your local supermarket? The Mexican candy store has more. A whole section of candy in your local department store? The Mexican candy store has more.

Clearly, we are fans. Do we need, or eat, that much candy? No. But it is wonderful to walk into one store and be surrounded by countless options and choices. We love the Mexican candy store!

We have already shared about our love and fun with Mexican candy and our admiration for the amazing Pinatas you find around town. We wanted to also give you a tour of the big Mexican candy stores that you can find in Tijuana, Mexico.

For our adventure in what can only be described as a real life candyland, we asked our dear friends Karla, Natalia and Valeria from Publikate Tijuana to join in the fun. Destination: Mega Dulces. It’s on the Via Rapida, has plenty of easy parking, and has been around long enough to have established a trusted reputation. It’s also huge. As in, I’ve been in supermarkets that are smaller than Mega Dulces.

It’s pretty much impossible to miss Mega Dulces. One moment you are on the Via Rapida and you see a pinkish sign and the next you can read Mega and are jumping in your seat with anticipation. And yes, that WHOLE building is the candy store.

Mega Dulces welcomes you with a large piñata selection and shopping carts. You know it’s on when the candy store supplies you not with baskets but with full sized shopping carts.

“Entrance”. The girls walked through the front door and couldn’t keep their cool. Their eyes and open jaws did all the talking for them. So we will let the pictures do most of the talking too. Everything you see is candy. I’ll repeat it so that you remember as you are looking at the pictures: everything you see is Mexican candy!

Isles and isles of candy, from hard candy to traditional candy to salty candy to hot and spicy candy, it’s all here in this giant candy store.

Of course there’s piñatas and chips (which you top with chamoy and chilli powder, available at the candy store too).

These aren’t small isles. These are full, supermarket sized isles stocked full of yummy candy.

Isle after isle after isle, the choices are seemingly endless.

Of course there are some specialty items that you don’t find in candy stores in other parts of the world. Chamoy, salsa, chilli powder and the like are always present in Mexican candy stores. The candy might already be salty and hot but that never stopped anyone in Mexico from adding even more spice and flavor in the form of these liquid concoctions. Remember the Tostilocos? Well, you can find everything you need to make them at Mega Dulces.

We started by picking up some of our favorites and then just couldn’t seem to stop ourselves.

The girls had a blast looking through all the candy options and choosing some to purchase

But when we talked about cutting back they immediately moved to protect the contents of the shopping cart!

With this crew it’s easy to understand why the best things in life are free. Well, the company anyway. But, honestly, I expected to pay a lot more for the amount of candy we bought. Mega Dulces has very reasonable prices for their candies and, if you add the hours of fun we had in the store, it was a steal!

The girls with their candy loot! Who said Disneyland was the happiest place on earth?
