A Saturday at Tijuana’s Galerias Hipodromo

A day at the mall?

Is this really what you are going to tell us about Magaly?

Yes, I am going to tell you about a mall. But don’t ask me what stores are there or prices or whathaveyou. I spend time at Galerias Hipodromo with one goal in mind: having fun with my kiddo. And fun we have.

Galerias Hipodromo is one of Tijuana’s newest malls. It is big and bright and shiny and conveniently located next to the Xolos futbol stadium and the Caliente casino. It’s also right on the Blvd. Agua Caliente, which means access to public transportation is a breeze.

And, on a very typical Saturday, we decided to meet up with friends to have some fun. Why the mall for some fun? (Seriously, people who know me are scratching their heads). Well, because this mall offers ceramic painting, a fish pond, stuffed animals to ride, and the Oh! Zone Family Entertainment Center. In short, because this mall packs some serious fun.

So how did a mall manage to get me to visit on purpose?

Lets start with the ceramic painting on the main level. For $25.00 M.N.(pesos), that’s $1.47 USD, you can pick a ceramic piece to paint on site. Available on Friday, Saturday and Sundays from 12:00pm to 8:00pm the lady manning this operation was incredibly friendly and helpful.

Further into the central courtyard the girls found the fish pond and swarmed to this area to have a look. There’s just something fun and magical about getting to see the fish swim about their day. Taking a cue from our Worldschooling mindset we talked about habitat, water quality and temperature, diet, different sizes and colors, and acclimatization to humans.

They had enjoyed some art and then their animal interaction but nothing could prepare them for what came next.

Turns out few things in life are as awesome as getting to ride a stuffed animal, twice, around the mall courtyard. At $20.00 M.N. (pesos) for two turns, that’s $1.18 USD, it’s a magnificent deal to watch their faces glow. Seriously, these kiddos were thrilled to know that they could ride a stuffed animal!

The glass elevator happens to be behind the stuffed animal rides and the expressions on their face says it all. Pure joy really is priceless.

The view from the top floor of Galerias Hipodromo is pretty cool and the wide open spaces are incredibly child friendly. In our world that means some running around and open air gymnastics!

Once on top it’s off to Oh! Zone. Oh! Zone is a family entertainment complex. With Tijuana’s only roller skating rink, Sky Jamboree (imagine an obstacle course but suspended in the air), an arcade, a bowling alley, a rock climbing wall, and its own food section, Oh! Zone aims to entertain everyone in the family and, in our experience, succeeds.

The girls next to the indoor rock climbing wall. For $30 pesos they can challenge themselves to the top!

The Sky Jamboree was closed the day we went. At $37 pesos a turn I was really looking forward to checking this one off my list (and that would be because I am incredibly afraid of heights).

Bowling costs $52 pesos Monday through Thursday and $90 pesos Friday through Sundays after 4pm

The big roller skating rink costs $69 pesos for two hours (including the rental skates) and you can even rent the special handle devise to keep you up (at $30 pesos). The kiddo didn’t need it but I sure would have.

I love the fact that Oh! Zone has those white safety/ balance bars for the kids.

Eventually everyone had to eat and we ordered a large pizza and two large soft drinks for the crew. The pizza was $157 pesos and each large soda costs $31 pesos. For $219 pesos/ $12 USD (IVA added), the five of us ate more than our fair share and refueled for more play time.

The verdict is unanimous: from the Border Free Adventures team and the girls at Publikate Tijuana, Galerias Hipodromo is a great place to spend the day out with the kiddos.

A few notes to consider:

Parking is not free. Depending on whether you spend two hours or five the price will range from $5 to $35 pesos (and more if you stay longer). But it is secure and underground, perfect for those hot days or the cold ones that follow.

An awesome surprise on our visit was the green cart pulling car wash guy. That’s right, there’s guys in the parking garage who will wash your car while you have fun inside. Cost will run you around $100.00 M.N. (pesos) but my car seriously needed it and I was impressed with the work when I returned to my parking spot. The man I talked to said that they are usually located on the first floor but he did make it to the second level to wash my car.

Oh! Zone can be found inside the Galerias Hipodromo Mall at 11999 Blvd. Agua Caliente, Local #208, Co. Hipodromo, 22024, Tijuana, B.C., Mexico. Tel., +52 664 608 4436. They are opened Monday to Thursday from 12:00pm to 10:00pm, Friday and Saturday from 12:00pm to 12:00am, and Sunday from 12:00pm to 10:00pm.
